LIVERPOOL.COM: ARTS AND EXHIBITIONS
Father & Son at Egg
Prolific Dad and Lad artists, Anthony and Nathan Pendlebury, follow up last year's successful 'Duo' shows with more of the same at our favourite vegetarian food establishment, Egg. As the title suggests, it's a selection of smaller paintings, prints, and photographs from their portfolios.
Mainly abstract works, the Pendlebury's show an excellent appreciation of colour and shape. Sadly, Anthony (Dad) recently suffered a severe stroke so is unlikely to be able to attend the opening. Liverpool.com wishes him a speedy recovery... Small Things Too, Anthony & Nathan Pendlebury, Until 1 March, Egg Cafe, Newington. Tel: (0151) 707 2755.

Small Things Too
Anthony Pendlebury and Nathan Pendlebury at Headspace Gallery (Egg Cafe).
Review by Charlotte Farinha for Catalyst Media/Nerve Magazine.
At first I did not understand how coincidental it was that on the street just around the corner two men were playing jazz. However, when I entered the exhibition I saw the mood, vivid colour, and complexity mixed with simplicity which is exactly what jazz and the exhibition are all about. It was this that really gave the room its explosive atmosphere. You could find yourself bouncing off walls, with each piece flowing neatly to the next, and yet standing just as strongly on their own.
The collections of small pieces (as suggested by the title) are from a father and son duo's repertoire, and although very different in media and style it is surprising how much the works compliment each other.
Nathan Pendlebury - the son - has a bold and simple style, whilst his father Anthony has more complex and textured work. However they are joined by the way they take broad observations and transform them into simple moving representation of what we see all the time.
Both parts of this duo take the mundane aspects of life and create almost dreamlike interpretations of them. Nathan's photography takes the things we see every day at new angles, whilst his ink drawings manage to capture almost childlike observations. It is a similar effect we get from his father's mixed media pieces which are mostly of harbours, and beaches, He creates these without the use of the “equipment” that usually inhibits most artists.
Anyone who loves colour, shape and a refreshing approach to exploring common sights or capturing a mood will love to look at their contrasting styles; I would highly recommend they visited this small exhibition.
